EB Water Bill « Return to Topics
Merdock13 Posted 10:8, 09/08/2009
I was wondering if anyone else got a recent water bill that was a lot higher than normal? I got mine and it had almost doubled!

michelekibbler Posted 15:5, 09/08/2009
Yes ours has doubled too. It makes me sick because we don't even drink it, we buy bottled instead.

coffeebreak Posted 18:34, 09/08/2009
I just checked my water bill and mine has also doubled. I do not drink the water either. Actually, I won't even cook with the water. Have you ever noticed after being gone for a couple of days and then run the washing machine, etc, the water has an awful smell to it. It is ridiculous to have to pay that much money for a water bill and not even get much use of it.

mystery Posted 19:4, 09/08/2009
I really thought for a while that the citizens had a lot more money than me. Personally, I think it is tooo late to do anything about it. The town is broke so I hear and they have let employees spend like there is no tomorrow. Such things as flags, that are not used, and things like cleaning fluid by the barrels. If the citizens think that a new Mayor and Board can get you out of this then think again. I debated tonight whether to cook potatoes in the water and I made a big decision not too. Everyone needs to go to the meetings and demand a reduction as it is not the citizens fault for so much over spending. Someone needs to be responsible. Wonder if they paid all the bills for the month of August. The local government commission can come in and take over and that might be a good thing. Sorry, I have to go to the store and buy water to drink....

laidback Posted 18:49, 09/09/2009
The water was increased by lowering the minimum amout of useage. Commissioner Todd said; "Our water revenues have decreased due in part to water conservation". I know, I was there! Sooo... We did voluntary water conservation due to the drought, as we were asked to and it ended up costing us!

mystery Posted 20:0, 09/09/2009
laid//Sorry to insult his intelligence but the only reason most have 'conserved' is the fact that we can not use the water and are having to buy it at the store. Makes no sense at all. Of course, nothing they do makes any sense but they just keep getting by with it. The money made on the water is not surpose to balance the budget. Quit spending, just like most people are doing now. They need to conserve.

Abbie Posted 23:14, 09/09/2009
Mystery, you are correct in that EB residents need to go to the commissioners meeting and inquire about their water bill. Mine has also doubled and it's ridiculous that we are afraid to cook and wash clothes in water that we pay for. Beware though...if you go to a meeting and ask questions you'll be lucky to get a straight answer. I've been at several meetings and it's pretty funny.

painintheA Posted 6:3, 09/10/2009
I live outside town.I have a well.I was wondering how much a water bill is a month?

68Thunderbird Posted 8:28, 09/12/2009
Pain, outside town limts the water bill is doubled. But the lines only extend so far in any direction.

I'm not sure how far, but they could tell you at Town Hall if you could get a live person and not an answering machine to pick up the phone.

I have attended commissioner meetings in the past just to be nosy and have left shaking my head almost every time. If a citizen asked a logical question on any item or concern they got a political non-answer from the board and/or the mayor.

Several residents asked Mr. Todd about the water quality and prices and received an answer so vague it could have been an answer to presidential candidates campaign question.

Kevin Austin has REPEATEDLY stated in these meetings that a water line could be run up highway 67 from the King water plant and in all likelihood actually REDUCE the water bills of the consumers. But, commissioner Todd, for whatever reason, refuses to explore any options that do not include the already existing precious, contaminated wells in use.

Also, there was a tap installed at the new water plant at Enon for Yadkin county use. The lines would be run up old 421 and out Flint Hill Rd. to East Bend. But, again, since it would take water revenue away from the town, they refuse to pursue this option as well.

I urge EACH person that pays a water bill to the town of East Bend to come to the next town board meeting Monday night September 14th at 7:30 at the Town Hall, and in the meantime, call county commissioner Kevin Austin and have him inform you of his findings on water solutions for East Bend. It is so easy to sit at a computer to type a complaint but if you want, expect, or demand action you MUST show up IN PERSON to let your voices be heard!

laidback Posted 12:4, 09/13/2009
Well, Town Board meeting is tomorrow night. I think I will go just to see if anyone else complains about the high cost of water that has a history of being contaminated. I would like to see if anyone is asking for the commissioners, other than Todd, propose the Town hook up to another water source.
He is not the ONLY Commissioner and this is probably his last term based on his age so I really don't think he gives a rats leg if he changes anything! This is an election year so let's see if the running candidates are willing to make needed change to stay in office! I do reccommend they do so because I WILL make a public issue with local media outlets until they do so!

dirtylittlesecrets Posted 18:22, 09/14/2009
Town Board meeting in little over an hour. Let's see how many residents will put feet to their complaints and actually show up.

walks the talk Posted 2:57, 09/15/2009
dirtylittlesecrets: Only 2 new faces..and they were there a very short time. And the new ones running for town positions..only one. I am not voting for anyone that doesn't even come to the meetings because that tells me that they do NOT care what is really going on. And so it goes.....

skype Posted 18:37, 09/15/2009
and goes and goes

laidback Posted 18:39, 09/16/2009
I couldn't make the meeing. Was there any discussion on water changes?

coffeebreak Posted 18:9, 09/17/2009
I looked at my water bill again and realized they had billed me for two months and I am assuming that is why it had doubled. Was anybody else billed for two months?

dirtylittlesecrets Posted 8:3, 09/18/2009
Water bills have always been bi-monthly. And yes, it HAS gone up. The commissioners voted to lower the minimum from 3000 gals. to 1000 gals. and every gallon over to be billed accordingly.

walks the talk Posted 3:9, 09/19/2009
radium cost a lot!

Nonsense Posted 18:39, 09/30/2009
walks~ What about the notice that was received today? It says, 'failed to do follow up sampling.' Does that mean that all those people doing the water and no one did the samples for some reason? Most people would be fired if they did not do their job..

coffeebreak Posted 21:9, 09/30/2009
I don't understand the notice I got in the mail today. Why would EB have failed to follow-up on sampling? This is ridiculous. How has the problem already been corrected? It does not make any sense to me. I have known that the water contains radium, but on the notice today it mentions something about Total Coliform Bacteria includes Fecal/E.coli bacteria. Does not sound good at all.

michelekibbler Posted 21:50, 09/30/2009
We will not drink the water in EB. I have been buying water for the family and pets for 3 years now. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Nonsense Posted 17:19, 10/01/2009
coffee & mich~Like I said, it plainly states that someone did not do their job. I don't know if it was intentional or not but the last water man LG would have never let that happen. EB deserves to get back on the right path. It was stated at the forum that the employees had done a good job of 'running the town'. Employees are NOT surpose to run a town. This is a good example of what happens when they are allowed to.We need help and we need it fast.

coffeebreak Posted 17:40, 10/01/2009
Nonsense;
I agree with you 100 percent that we need help. What can we do to get the help we need? What does taking two montly samples prove other than that our water supply is still badly contaminated? I cannot stand the fact of even having to take a shower in the nasty stuff. I can't help but to worry about our health. I do not drink the water, but I assume the kids at school have no choice but to drink it. Also, is this what we are being served at the resturants in town?

Nonsense Posted 19:11, 10/01/2009
coffee~There is a company coming around EB that is selling very expensive water filter systems that are suppose to do the job. I, personally, can't afford that right now so I'll stick with the bottled water. yes, I'm sure the resturants in town are using the water. I usually don't drink much or order a soda or take water with me. It's a shame that we are paying the prices we are for something we can't use. And on top of that we have to worry that employees are not taking the necessary samples on time. Last time I was at a school function, the kids were drinking lots of water. I know a very old women here that has drank the water for 80 some years and just had a kidney removed with a large tumor in it. The Dr. had no explanation for it and it was not cancer but yet the kidney was removed as the tumor would have taken over the kidney. She has always drank the water here. Who knows if that caused it or not. This may also be a sign of the times as stated in the Bible. I don't know if there is an answer. But we need reliable people in office who are capable of making good decisions.

Grams Posted 20:45, 10/01/2009
I know a family in East Bend that 3 members have had cancer - one is now deceased and the other 2 are still taking chemo. Two people up the street has also had cancer and both are just recently deceased.

coffeebreak Posted 21:7, 10/01/2009
You can't help but wonder if the cancer is related to the contaminated water. It is a scary thought. I have water delivered to my home by Water Boy. They have the huge bottles and also the stand with it. I was buying water by the gallons, but it got too expensive as we were buying them daily. It is also convenient to have when you need it. I think it is ridiculous that we are paying for water that we are afriad to use, and the bill keeps going up as well.

walks the talk Posted 3:17, 10/02/2009
Please come to EB commish meetings and let your feelings be known. Bring the mailed report with you..Let's find out exactly what it means. BTW, with every violation, there is a fine..fines that are our tax dollars, and this town is broke already.

research/east bend water

coffeebreak Posted 7:47, 10/02/2009
Walks;
Thanks for the info. I was not aware of the link until your post. It sickens me even more now that I have read it.

Thanks again

walks the talk Posted 1:27, 10/03/2009
You are welcome. Yes, it is sickening..literally.

Elizabeth Posted 9:25, 10/04/2009
I think we all need to Rally together somehow, hire a lawyer, and sue the town's leaders. It has been obvious for years that they are NOT doing their job. Poor Mr. Todd thinks, "I'm not sure" and "I'll check into it" are good enough anwsers for every question thrown at him. Sad thing is, it has always worked in the past and still works presently. I am tired of scum growing on my shower curtains, toilets, tubs, etc. This is the biggest joke of "drinking water" I have ever seen. They need to be held accountable to what they are doing to our bodies and soon.

Grams Posted 10:5, 10/04/2009
Has anyone took a look at the town charter? There are certain things that are mandatory to be incorporated into a town - and I am sure that clean water and adequate sewer are at the top of the list. You might be able to use this as your citizen leverage.

infoguy Posted 10:42, 10/04/2009
Most towns/cities are required to have the water tested by and a report made available to the water users! Where does East Bend gets its water?

laidback Posted 14:3, 10/05/2009
Walks... I read the report at the link you provided. Is anyone accountable for the lack of monitoring? How do we know our water is safe? Is anyone in town leadership accountable for this? If so; how do we call them on it? Is there a state agency who can step in and force things to be done properly? If a commissioner is responsible can they be asked to step down and if so by whom?

Dreamz Posted 19:5, 10/08/2009
laid- Since there is no Manager, I would say the Mayor is in charge of being accountable for such things as the safety and monitoring of especially the water. the Local Government Commission would listen to your complaints. The commissioners are elected and probably can't get rid of them to easily. Maybe a petition with every citizens name on it and then not sure it that would work. The person that should be held accountable is the water person. But that won't work cause they retired.....

68Thunderbird Posted 8:24, 10/10/2009
East Bend water and toothpaste from China. Guaranteed to give you a GLOW IN THE DARK smile :D :D :D :D!!!!!

jjsparks Posted 9:37, 11/12/2009
You people down there in EB need to call your government agencies in Raleigh and have them to launch an investigation into this matter. I would not be surprised to find that your problem is with the former town employee who handled or did not handle this job appropriately.

walks the talk Posted 1:15, 07/16/2010
And the (per topic) EB water bills are up again.
Bad water is quite expensive.

dirtylittlesecrets Posted 5:40, 07/16/2010
Has anyone in East Bend called the State about the water problems?

jj Posted 7:17, 07/16/2010
Have you ever tasted Boonville's water it smells like a sewer and tastes bad. Why does anyone have to pay for water that is suppose to be drinkable water and smells like a dead rat.
