Everyone talks about more growth bringing lower taxes. I have never seen it happen. The new people demand more from the government, more regulations, more roads, more services. Taxes GO UP!

Oogie, then how do you explain N. Myrtle Beach, SC having an almost non-existent personal real estate tax. My buddy has a $300k condo and pays less than $500 property tax!

talkischeap,,, some counties in S C voted and passed a 1 cent sales tax and used it to lower the taxes on your personal property. When I lived ib S C My taxes went from $740. to $375 in one year. They adopted the same thing that Jacksonville Fla did. We, in NC get taxed on everthing that moves and don't move. NC has lost a lot of Retired Military personnel. They are going to SC,GA,FL.

Oogie, sounds to me like my friend is still getting a great deal even if his sales tax went up. And it sounds to me like "growth" is the reason.

I dont think that growth brings lower taxes I think lower taxes brings growth.-----Havent you noticed that all these businesses moved out of the country!! Why---Taxes. If you want them back so bad and are willing to make the investment tell them they can come in and pay no taxes. You will see your empty buildings start to fill up. You will see people with money to spend again and you will see more houses sell, more goods and services used and yes more taxes paid. Now your going to take a small hit where a building becomes a tax free property but that may not be forever and maybe be dependent on the scope of the business but in the end---there will be some jobs to be had-----Isnt that the most important thing?----Just look at Mt. Airy----It used to be a center for the textile market nows it practically gone.----Wake up America-----lower taxes on business means prosperity for all of us. Right now we are having to tax the heck out of the working man to shore up the budgets that are affected by all of this loss. Duh!!!

pit, how do you propose YC pay the bills if it cuts the tax rate BEFORE increasing the tax base?

You dont cut the tax rate across the board. You exempt incoming business to taxes to get them to come in---maybe for a defined term or you give them a deal where they only pay a part of it.

I agree with pitbull, You can offer a Business a 5 yr. breakon taxes. After that up the taxes a little By then maybe they have become more of steady partnership.(with the county).

Thats right Leroy that is what I was talking about. No eliminating taxes for population. You cant do it all not at one time anyway. We didnt get like this overnight, it wont be fixed overnight either. Unfortunately someone has to pay.

Hold on, Leroy, which is it? You can't say a week ago to "drop the rate to .55" and now you say leave the rate like it is and give incentives to business! Which is it? Oh, I already know. The tax breaks for business is right on the money. No other way to make it happen. That "55 cent" statement was and is ridiculous.
whitey, you are just stupid, period.

Trying to backpedal, huh, Leroy. You plainly said the first thing to do was "cut the tax rate to .55". Piss you off before you go to church you say? Yeah, I'd be pissed too is somebody called me on my flip-flop. If you are aggitated its because I pointed out your inconsistence.

Well it sucks to raise children to have them want to leave because there is nothing here to come home to. That sucks sure enough. So lets do something to build an infrastructure and if that mean lower taxes for business I think that is a really good place to start. I dont mind paying taxes if I feel we are getting somewhere but no one says we have to have all these idiots we elect spending it for us on anything other than bringing in more business.

Newday, I agree but tell us what what the idiots should cut to increase business. I just looked at the county budget on the county website, and they are spending 20% on education, 21% on sheriff/ems, 31% on health and dss, and 24% on other stuff (planning/permits/inspections, tax office, etc.). JUST 2% IS BEING SPENT ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THAT IS NOT ENOUGH!
What should they cut?

If it were my 2% to spend I would spend it right. I would offer the whole 2% to employers as tax incentives to get someone to come here. Next year I would do it again and the year after that and the year after that. I would leave just enough of the 2 percent to use for catering some small events for prospective employers looking for a favorable home. Those deals take time to materialize anyway and next year when hopefully someone we fed comes to Yadkin to set up shop those would be the people we give the yearly incentive to. I would specialize in being nice and thankful and if we have to cut something we divide the budget of each of those sections in half and ask the departments to cut as hard as possible any surplus remaining I would take back for economic development and then award the new budget for the rest of the year and then repeat the process. There may not be much of a way to get out of the hole that people like so we may have to work our way out the old fashioned way with hard work.

Your plan is good but it will take a LOOONNGGGG time. Can we wait that long? Also, how does that differ from what is being done now?

I have no idea what is being done now. I actually try not to pay attention. I dont get the Ripple and rarely see Yadkin on the news and I busy myself working all of the time. So I really dont know.

There aren't enough people in YC desiring development to hurry the whole thing along. And there are a number of reasons.
1. "I worked out of town all my life to provide for my family...you can, too!" Reality, with a healthy dose of bitterness.
2. "I like the YC "lifestyle" and don't want development to mess it up." Selfish and short-sighted...but honest.
3. "I do just fine here(some farmers and established business owners)...what's your problem?" Apathetic
Now throw in any number of other concerns....increased crime, fear or increased taxes (annexation), etc.
But, I have a simple theory. One that contradict the image many have of YC. I simply think there are too many people who don't want to see others have what they did their entire lives without and they certainly don't want to pay for it!

I would love to see Yadkin County grow but I do not want it to get too big, I enjoy living where I can have a bigger yard, can yell and not have the entire block hear me, the crime & taxes are lower than surrounding counties, our taxes are high enough and there is plenty enough crime to go around. Basically I just enjoy the peaceful times that you would not have if we grew to a big county. Just my opinion. I want to see anyone better themselves but maybe if this generation had to work for what they get like mine did & does, they might appreciate a slower lifestyle as well.
